What is The Pride in Place Strategy?

The UK Government’s £5 billion “Pride in Place” initiative is a decade-long commitment to fostering stronger, healthier communities by enhancing local infrastructure, promoting community ownership, and empowering residents to shape their environments.

Strengthening Social Infrastructure

The strategy targets areas facing both high deprivation and limited social infrastructure – such as community centres, libraries, and public spaces. By investing in these vital spaces, the government aims to improve social and economic outcomes, ensuring all communities have the resources to thrive.

Emphasising Community Ownership

Recognising the value of community-led initiatives, the strategy introduces a “Community Right to Buy,” granting local groups the first opportunity to purchase and manage assets like underused buildings. This approach fosters a fairer, more inclusive economy by empowering residents to take control of their shared spaces.

Strategic Investment for Local Impact

The strategy allocates up to £20 million over the next decade to support neighbourhoods with approximately 10,000 residents each. Additionally, the £150 million “Pride in Place Impact Fund” will finance up to 95 locations across the UK to develop shared spaces, revitalise high streets, and enhance public areas. Local communities will have a central role in deciding how these funds are spent, ensuring that investments align with their unique needs and priorities.

Opportunities for VCFSE Organisations

The Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector plays a pivotal role in the strategy’s implementation. Organisations are encouraged to participate in Neighbourhood Boards, collaborate with local authorities, and apply for funding opportunities, including the £3 million “Common Ground Resilience Fund,” which supports community cohesion and resilience initiatives.

The Pride in Place Strategy represents a transformative approach to community development, placing power and resources directly in the hands of those who know their communities best. Through collaborative efforts and strategic investments, it seeks to build a future where every neighbourhood can flourish
